FCC is contributing to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the LIFE programme with a practical demonstration of the METHAmorphosis project at Ecoparc 2, Montcada i Reixac (Barcelona)

FCC is contributing to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the LIFE programme, the European Union's financial instrument for the environment for the 2014-2020 period, with a practical demonstration of the METHAmorphosis project at Ecoparc 2, the municipal waste-treatment centre in Montcada i Reixac, Barcelona, that is operated by FCC Medio Ambiente (the Spanish brand for FCC Environment).

Presentations were made by Gloria Sánchez Santos, head of quality control at the Department of Waste Prevention and Management for Area Metropolitana Barcelona (AMB), and Antonio Giménez, who is managing the project for Aqualia. The day ended with a visit to the facilities where METHAmorphosis is being developed. Visitors saw the project status first-hand as well as a heavy-duty, CNG vehicle that is used by FCC Medio Ambiente to deliver municipal services in which the methane from METHAamorphosis will be tested.

Through the METHAmorphosis project, FCC has been involved with the LIFE programme's R&D framework since 2015. Led by Aqualia the METHAmorphosis project also involves Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), FCC Medio Ambiente, Gas Natural Fenosa, the Institut Català d'Energia (ICAEN) and SEAT. Its purpose is to develop an innovative process to increase the amount of biofuel that can be obtained from municipal waste.

METHAmorphosis, which was selected by the prestigious European LIFE programme in support of actions to mitigate climate change, seeks to increase the production of biogas from the leachate resulting from the treatment of municipal waste, by changing the treatment techniques used as well as introducing new ones. Once enriched, the methane gas resulting from the process will be used as fuel for vehicles, thereby reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.
