The Life Landfill Biofuel project, which was recently approved by the European Commission, has an overall budget of 4.67 million euros, 55% funded through the LIFE Programme. This project, is led by FCC and with a duration of four years, has a consortium of seven companies from spain and Portugal: CARTIF Foundation, SYSADVANCE, GASNAM, University of Granda, IVECO and SEAT.

The Life Landfill Biofuel project aim is to demonstrate the technical performance of a profitable biomethane production system from the biogas generated in landfills and its use as biofuel in vehicles. The biomethane obtained will be tested in a waste collection truck of IVECO brand owned by the FCC and three SEAT light cars.

The project, based on adsorption technology developed by Sysadvance, will be a demonstration of how renewable gas (or biomethane) generated from waste can be the solution to two of the main problems currently existing in the European Union: transport decarbonisation and the improvement of air quality.

The European Union has more than half million landfills that will can only accommodate 10% of municipal waste by 2035, as dictated by the new Waste Directive that will enter into force in 2020. The development of projects to obtain biomethane from organic matter is an opportunity to boost the circular economy and convert waste into a resource that, collaterally, will reduce road transport emissions.
