Naturgy Foundation organised the Technology Forum "Promoting the Development of Renewable Gas in Spain"

The main conclusion reached at the first Technology Forum on Renewable Gas was that this energy, the environmental impact of which is neutral, will strengthen the ability to meet decarbonisation goals and therefore enable promotion of the circular economy. The promotion of renewable gas also fosters development in rural areas because it is mainly based on the operation of agri-food resources and promotes local cooperation between the various stakeholders involved (farmers, livestock farmers, power companies, engineering firms, local public authorities, technology experts, etc.).

Earlier today, the President of the Spanish Gas Association, Sedigas, Antoni Peris, and the General Manager of the Naturgy Foundation, Martí Solà, officially opened the 1st Technology Forum for debate entitled "Promoting the Development of Renewable Gas in Spain".

At the session, 20 renowned experts in the sector analysed the current situation of this energy in Spain and the basic ideas for designing a programme of actions to foster renewable gas as a sustainable energy in the medium term. The production process for this fuel –from start to final consumption– and the various technological, economical and regulatory barriers currently faced were also discussed at the event.

At the end of the session, the group of experts proposed a series of effective measures to foster the development of renewable gas in Spain. This proposal stemmed from the conclusions reached by each speaker at the 1st Technology Forum.

"Renewable gas plays an essential role in the energy transition we are currently going through. We simply must plan the necessary adaptations in the country's gas infrastructure over the coming years in order to harness all the potential of this energy", said Antoni Peris. "Enabling the gas network to receive renewable energy is a sustainable and economically competitive option for promoting a decarbonised energy system", he added.

The group of experts agreed that renewable natural gas brings environmental benefits because it is an energy with low greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Its production helps meet the targets set by the European Union for the energy system decarbonisation process aimed at making it stable, competitive and sustainable, and enabling promotion of the circular economy.

"Support for innovation and promotion of renewable gas is crucial to its development. At the Naturgy Foundation, we are working on initiatives –such as this forum– to find solutions in the development of this sustainable energy while achieving sustained economic savings over time", said Martí Solà.
